Allergies in Thailand

One of our children has the following allergies:

  • Peanut Allergy
  • Egg Allergy
  • Milk Allergy

When we were planning a trip to visit friends in Thailand, one of the concerns raised by our friends in Thailand was that peanuts, eggs and to a lesser extent milk are used a lot in Thai food.

To make life more interesting, having something like peanut allergy in Thailand is far more complicated if you cannot speak, understand or read the Thailand language. How do you explain “I have an allergy to peanuts” in Thai.

Thankfully a missionary friend of our friends in Thailand came to the rescue.

We used the following notice throughout our three week trip to Thailand with almost complete success. The only problem we had was in a big hotel in Chaing Mai where we had a western buffet. All the small local shops, restaurants all understood, the staff being extremely helpful.

Apparently in the Thai culture people are very keen to please and will often say yes when they really mean no.  To overcome this problem, we decided to make the text extremely blunt to get their attention - and it worked very well.   People were always pleased to help.
