LEFROG Day 1 – St Malo to Vitré

At 6am, the gentle alarm sounded on the ferry waking us.

We showered, dressed and went up to the deck to see the approach to St Malo.

After getting to our vehicle, we got off the ferry quickly and drove to meet our support driver Jo and her husband Neil at a wonderful boulangerie. We treated ourselves to almond chocolate croissant and coffee, before unloading our bikes, faffing a bit and got on the road from the Emerald Coast to Medieval Spires: Cycling Saint-Malo to the medieval stronghold of Vitré.

Our 97-kilometer route took us on a deep dive into the rolling pastoral heartland of Brittany.

The weather was lovely, some shade protected us from the hot sun. There was some coolness in the air which was appreciated.

At the 50-kilometer mark, we met Jo behind the Marie at Saint Leger des Pres. There was a picnic bench, and we had a blanket and enjoyed baguette and cheese and vine tomatoes for lunch.

We passed through picturesque French villages, passed golden fields and many beautiful churches.

Scenic highlights of the afternoon included bridge over the Lac de la Cantache.

With 97 kilometers logged, we rolled past the final ridge and into the historic streets of Vitré, with its imposing castle marking the perfect end to our first day in France.
