Our accommodation had been extremely pleasant and restful. It seemed a shame that we couldn’t stay to appreciate it for longer.
The house was in the centre of the town and in very narrow streets, so we had to park a little way a way in a car park.
I offered to push Soo’s bike back to the car so that I could balance my heavy bag on the handle bars.
When we had loaded the car, we set off with the bikes on our route. The ride started out with a bit of the climb which is always a challenge when you have just eaten porridge and have not yet had time to spin up the legs!
We saw a large group of grape pickers arriving in the vineyards.
After that the route flattened out as we cycled through a sea of green.
As we continued we were getting closer and closer to Mont Ventoux!
We went through the busy town of Carpantras, and then on to Villes-sur-Auzon where we stopped for lunch.
With lunchtime legs, the climbing began as we rose through the spectacular Gorge de la Nesque.
The climb was gradual and at times to the eye seemed like a descent, however the legs and the pedals indicated otherwise.
The temperature rose. We saw the path ahead in some shade but as we approached it, the cloud have moved on and the sweltering sun remained.
We saw an eagle soaring in the gorge below.
Eventually we reached the peak and lookout point looking back down the vallee.
We then followed a gentle descent to Sault where our accommodation for the next two nights will be.
