The Upton Standard Aquabike was a race that I had been very interested in doing alongside friend and fellow Tuff Sue Simpson.
The event also happened to be a qualifier for the World Championship Triathlon Series to be held in Wollongong near Sydney, Australia in October 2025.
Although Colin had assured Sue and myself that we had qualified, I didn’t allow myself to believe it until I saw the evidence on the BTF website!
I hadn’t expected to qualify but amazingly within about 10 days of the event, the BTF website was updated and there was the confirmation that both Sue and I had qualified!
This triggered Sue and Colin’s campaign to encourage Adrian to try and qualify for the Standard Triathlon in his age group – which is a lot more competitive.
I was fortunate in that at age 64, I will be in the 65-69 age group next year when the championships take place. Also most people who can do triathlon do. This means that the field of competitors in Aquabike is probably the weaker subset of the multisport community. But none-the-less, a Q is a Q!
I shall wear my team GB tri-suit with pride!
I was born in Brisbane, Australia and have family and friends there. I haven’t visited since my gap year following university.
It will be a very special opportunity to go back and visit the land of my birth and catch up with distant friends and family.
